I don't understand why Meta and Twitter are charging a monthly fee for this. Surely, it's in their best interest to have as many verified users as possible on their respective platforms? Surely, they want to get to the point where there are so many verified people, that you don't trust anything that comes from a non-verified user? I understand there's a massive logistical challenge with verifying users across the globe, but there must be a better way than charging a non-trivial monthly fee for the "benefit" of being verified.
