Decentralized protocols seem to work well for things like email and web sites though. I think the idea is that most people will use a provider to run the server, but it is possible/easy to switch between providers. The lack of lock-in and network effects at the provider specific level mean that competition can do its thing and people won't have to put up with shenanigans like retroactive privacy changes a-la Facebook.
